Exemptions

Edinburgh Business School recognises that some students entering the programme will have completed prior academic study in subjects that align closely to certain EBS courses. Exemption from core courses may therefore be granted on the basis of prior academic qualifications attained by examination. No consideration can be given for life/work experience.

Undergraduate/postgraduate degrees and postgraduate diplomas may attract a maximum of one exemption.

If you wish to apply for exemption on the basis of an undergraduate/postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma please download the Exemption Application Form and return this to EBS along with a certified (and, if applicable, translated) copy of your certificate of award and transcript of results.

Relevant professional qualifications may attract a maximum of two exemptions. We currently award exemptions on the basis of over 30 professional qualifications, a list of which can be found here. The exemptions are based on the professional body's own syllabus and examinations. Designation or membership of professional bodies obtained by a different route (e.g. life experience or recognition of prior learning) may not attract the same exemption awards.

The exemption awards listed relate to professional qualifications gained within the last 5 years. In such cases, only a copy of the award/membership certificate need be submitted with the Exemption Application Form.

Application for exemption on the basis of a professional qualification achieved prior to this must be accompanied by a copy of the award/membership certificate, a full syllabus and transcript of results, as possible exemption awards will be determined by the syllabus in use at the time examinations were sat and may therefore differ to those on the publicised list.

If you hold a professional qualification that is not listed, you may request that it be assessed for eligibility by submitting a certified (and, if applicable, translated) copy of the award certificate, examination results and a detailed syllabus.

Exemption awards made on the basis of professional qualifications are reviewed regularly to ensure they continue to be relevant to the syllabi in current use by Edinburgh Business School. The publicised list will be updated to reflect this; you are advised, therefore, to check our most recent listing of awards before submitting an exemption application.
